瓦西里升天大教堂位于红场的南面，又名波克罗夫大教堂。教堂建于1555-1561年，它是伊凡雷帝为了纪念1552年战胜喀山鞑靼军队而下令建筑的。瓦西里升天大教堂前面是民族英雄米宁和波扎尔斯基雕像（1818年雕像落成）。 1611年至1612年，他们打败了波兰侵略军，解放了莫斯科。
这座有着像洋葱一样圆顶的大教堂，被誉为“一个石头的神话”，是莫斯科最美丽、最童话的教堂，是俄罗斯16世纪民间建筑艺术风格的典范。从红场的远端望去，那九座带着五颜六色洋葱头般可爱圆顶的教堂宛如童话世界中美丽公主所住的宫殿。
The famous St. Basil’s Cathedral was commissioned by lvan the Terrible and built on the edge of Red S-
quare between 1555 and 1561. The cathedral was built to commemorate lvan the Terrible’s successful milita-
ry campaign against the Tartar Mongols in 1552 in the besieged city of Kazan.
St. Basil’s is a delightful array of swirling colors and redbrick towers. Its design comprises nine individual
chapels, each topped with a unique onion dome and each commemorating a cictorious assault on the city of
Kazan.
