白宫由著名的美籍爱尔兰人建筑师詹姆斯·霍本设计。二十美元纸币的背面图片就是白宫。
1792年10月13日，华盛顿总统亲自破土安放基石，到1800年完成，第二届总统约翰·亚当斯首先入内居住。它的原始颜色是灰色，在1814—1817年重建后被漆成了白色，1902年由西奥多·罗斯福正式命名为“白宫”，又称它为天字第一号讲坛。
1960年12月19日，白宫获确认为一处国家历史地标。
The White House has stood as a symbol of the Presidency, the United States government, and the American people. It is the official residence and principal workplace of the President of the United States.
Located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW in Washington, D. C., it was built between 1792 and 1800 of white-painted Aquia sandstone in the late Georgian style and has been the executive residence of every U.S. President since John Adams.
At various times in history, the White House has been known as the ”President’s Palace,” the ”Preside-nt’s House,” and the ”Executive Mansion.” It survived a fire at the hands of the British in 1814 (during the w-ar of 1812), the building first painted white after it was rebuilt in 1817. President Theodore Roosevelt official-
ly gave the White House its current name in 1901.
